AC/DC record sales jump & No more RnR Train clip

The news of the release of AC/DC’s first album in 8 years has sent a lot of new fans out for an educational catch-up and some old ones for a refresher course.

On this week’s ARIA chart, AC/DC are at no. 47 with ‘TNT’, no. 61 with ‘Highway To Hell’, no. 62 with ‘Dirty Deeds Done Cheap’, no. 74 with ‘Who Made Who’ and no. 92 with ‘The Razor’s Edge’.
Collectively, the albums sold 3324 units which on this week’s chart was more than what the number 9 album did.
It was an interesting choice of titles going over the counter. Three of the albums are from the early era with Bon Scott. ‘The Razor’s Edge’ features Brian Johnson and ‘Who Made Who’ was a soundtrack featuring both Bon and Brian.
AC/DC’s new album ‘Black Ice’ will be released on October 18 in Australia and October 20 in the USA.

Billboard.com has a nice small Black Ice Preview, covering a few tracks:

Due Oct. 20 exclusively in Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores as well as ACDC.com, the set opens with the single "Rock'n'Roll Train," a riffy blast sure to please longtime fans. The track goes to U.S. radio Aug. 28. Elsewhere, "Big Jack" nods to the vintage major-key rocker "Who Made Who," while "Wheels" is a hands-in-the-air nod to old favorites such as "Highway to Hell" and "Givin' the Dog a Bone." Frontman Brian Johnson is in fine form on tracks like "War Machine" ("Better watch your back and cover your tracks!," he warns), the sparse "Decibel," partially sung in his deep, natural voice, and the anthemic "Anything Goes." "Black Ice" ends with its title track, an old-school blues rocker that finds Johnson growling, "I'll gouge your eyes out."

I would guess that the riffs and sound of the album are along the lines of the BIB era. This would be great.
As for me: I've listened the that 30 second clip about 100 times!

New AC/DC album official announcments!

Columbia Records announced today the October 20th release of AC/DC's widely-anticipated Black Ice, the band's first studio album in eight years. Black Ice features 15 new tracks from brothers Angus and Malcolm Young, Brian Johnson, Cliff Williams, and Phil Rudd. The album was produced by Brendan O'Brien at the Warehouse Studio in Vancouver, BC.

"Rock 'N' Roll Train," the album's first single, will debut on August 28th. The video will premiere in September. And the band is set to kick off its first world tour since 2001 in late October.

Black Ice will be sold in the U.S. exclusively at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club retail locations at the special price of $11.88. Online, the CD will be available with free shipping and handling via the band's website, http://www.acdc.com/. It will also be sold at Walmart.com and Samsclub.com.

Black Ice is currently available for pre-order at http://www.acdc.com/ and Walmart.com.

Brian on Hard Rock Treasures DVD

The Young brothers of AC/DC, Angus and Malcolm, now each have one of Mackie's revolutionary new Digital X Bus X.200 recording consoles in their personal studios–located in the Netherlands and London respectively. In addition, they have both specified Mackie HDR24/96 hard disk recorders and completed their updates with a pair of Mackie HR824 Active Studio Monitors in each studio.

Brian Johnson joins Velvet Revolver on stage!

On Tuesday September 6th, Brian Johnson joined Velvet Revolver on stage at Hard Rock Live in Orlando for a rendition of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" during a benefit concert for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Current "New Album" Information

Here's all the information that has been gathered about the new album from various magazines and interviews:
"New Album To Be 'Harder' Than The Last
Brian Johnson told Italy's Rock Hard magazine that the band will definitely come out with a new studio album in 2004 and that guitarist Angus Young has written "harder" riffs than "Stiff Upper Lip". Johnson also said he will be handling lyrics this time around, which will mark the first time since 1988's "Blow Up Your Video" that Johnson will be penning lyrics for the band. He also said that a world tour will coincide with the release of the new album."

According to Brian Johnson, who appeared on Alice Cooper's radio show Wed night April 6th, 2005, Angus & Malcolm are currently in London, putting "finishing touches" to new material for the upcoming AC/DC album. This confirms the rumors that they were in London doing so, and also confirms the other "new album" rumors as false.
We can assume the band will be entering the studio to record soon, probably during Spring/Summer '05.

Apr. 11, 2005 Launch Radio Networks reports: AC/DC leaders Angus and Malcolm Young have been working on the band's new record for quite a while, and now we know why — it might be a double album! Singer Brian Johnson said the Youngs are "ensconced" in a U.K. studio, and that they just keep writing new material. "I think, and I might be speaking out of turn, but I think they're doing a double, with the amount of songs — I've been over a couple of times with the boys and added ideas on 46 tunes we had, and they've been working since then!"

Johnson isn't sure whether the album will come out this year or next, but he did say the band will tour when it comes out.

April 25th, 2005:

AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson was interviewed by Eddie Trunk on the "Friday Night Rocks" show on New York's Q104.3 FM this past Friday (April 22). Several excerpts from the interview follow (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET):

On the status of the new AC/DC studio album:

"We should be getting together pretty soon. I've already been with Mal [Malcolm Young, guitar] and Ang [Angus Young, guitar] and we've run a few tunes by each other, and it's sounding great. I think Mal said it best when he said, 'We don't wanna just bring out another album.' It's gotta be something really… It's gotta be perfect. And now him and Angus are really working hard to get something so special. I've been in the studio and I sang a few of the songs with the boys, a couple of little teasers, and I've gotta tell you, I was knocked out with the stuff they were coming up with."

On whether there is any truth to the report that the upcoming CD may be a double:

"I said the other day to somebody, I said, 'Jesus, we've written enough songs, it could be a box set.' And Sony Records got on the phone and said, 'Don't ever say that. Don't ever say that again.' [Laughs] 'These people will be expecting one.' I said, 'I was kidding.' I think it's basically the fact that the guys wanted as much down as possible just so we could pick some gems out. And the great thing is, there'll be a load of songs left over for something in the future — you never know."

On when he expects to begin recording the new AC/DC album:

"I haven't got a specific date, but I just know that once we start, it's like an avalanche — we just start moving, and we move quick and fast. But we do want it to be good. And I know Malcolm and Angus have stressed that they want it to be perfect — they want everybody to have a great show, great songs… It's tough to put your finger on it, but we just want it to be good. Nobody goes in the studio to do a bad album — nobody. But this time they're looking for a 100 percent guarantee of a great album."

On which studio they will use to record the new album:

"I don't know where we're gonna record it — you know, there's so many great studios. Last time [for 2000's 'Stiff Upper Lip'] we did in Vancouver, 'cause it was a fabulous little studio, Bryan Adams' studio [Warehouse]. He's got a great studio up there which isn't digital, which gives you lovely warm sounds — it's analog and it's fabulous. We had a great time there, so I'm hoping we go back, but you never know — there's always another deal coming in from somebody else who's got a great studio, so you've just gotta keep your eyes and ears open."

On which producer they will use for the upcoming CD:

"I haven't got a clue. George, I love George — George Young, the boys' [Angus' and Malcolm's] brother. He's lovely. He's just great, he gets the best out of us, but so does 'Mutt' Lange, but I know Mutt wants to try to keep away from the scene as much as possible with his lovely wife. But let's put it this way: That's the short list. And it doesn't get any better than that."
